The Tri-C Baseball team put a stranglehold on first place in the OCCAC with a hard fought four game sweep of Clark State on Friday and Saturday.
Game 1 vs. Clark State, W 6-5 (10 innings)
In what would become the first of two extra inning games at Ron Mottl Field, the Tops jumped out to an early 5-1 lead through 6 innings led by another good outing by Ty Pangborn (6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 9 K's). Silas Moore led the Tri-C with three hits while Mason Koons, Jake Downey, Connor Bozak and Kyle Koehler all had two hits for the Tops but it took a Silas Moore sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Bozak from third after a lead off triple.
Game 2 vs. Clark State, W 8-5 (10 innings)
Once again the Tops would jump out to a lead. They led 4-2 heading to the 7th but the Eagles scored twice to tie it up and force extra innings once again. The Eagles would score one in the Top of the 9th to take a 5-4 lead but a Kyle Koehler one out opposite field homerun in the bottom of the 9th kept the score tied, 5-5. Dylan Hatfield shut down the Eagles in the Top of the 10th to set the stage for a dramatic ending. Jacob Connery led off the inning with a double and after a pitching change, Jon Yackovic sacrificed Connery to third. Silas Moore walked. Enter Cole Archual who was a defensive replacement for Braden Reed. Archual fouled off the first pitch and then proceeeded to win the game with a three run homerun! Hatfield picked up the win.
Game 3 at Clark State, W 8-2
Determined to make things a little easier, the Tops got a complete game masterful performance from Layton O'Rourke as he went the distance, throwing only 85 pitches (60 for strikes), striking out 5 and scattering 6 hits. At the plate Downey continues his hot streak going 3 for 4, while Koehler and Carter Blakeman each had multiple hits. Downey also had 3 RBIS.
Game 4 at Clark State, W 9-4
Looking for the sweep, the Tops sent Kris Jenkins to the hill. He responded by going 3 solid innings giving up only one run on five hits while striking out three. Gavin Mangus and Jackson Judy came in relief and limited the Eagles to 3 runs while striking out a combined 5. Collecting multiple hits for the Tops were: Jacob Connery and Cole Archual,
The Tops are now 17-7 on the season and move to 10-0 in the OCCAC. They will look for their 10th straight win as they travel to Lakeland for a key OCCAC doubleheader starting at 2 pm today. They will end the week with a 4 game set with Hocking on Saturday and Sunday. Lakeland is 4-3 in the OCCAC while Hocking is 2-8 in the conference.
