Boguski steal of home gives Triceratops thrilling sweep of Hagerstown CC

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (athletics.tri-c.edu) – While game one was devoid of drama, game two was full of it, capped off by a bold seventh inning steal of home by Braelyn Boguski (Fr./Parma, Ohio) to lock in the Cuyahoga Community College (29-5, 15-1 OCCAC) sweep of the home Hagerstown Community College Hawks (15-20, 8-10 MD JUCO), April 27.

The sweep brings Tri-C's winning streak to 10 straight and 22 of their last 23 games. The win also keeps the Triceratops unbeaten on the road, at a perfect 14-0.

Game one was a typical gem from Julee Phillips (So./Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio), who blanked the Hawks over the six inning run-rule victory with 14 strikeouts and only four hits allowed. Her offense, of course, had a huge outing in the 13-0 victory, headlined by Lexi Gray (So./Tallmadge, Ohio/Baldwin-Wallace)'s four hits and three base knocks from Reese Adkins (So./Glen Oak, Ohio) and Isabelle Kepple (So./Miamisburg, Ohio).

Game two was the thrilling offensive masterclass Tri-C has cooked up many times in the winning streak. Boguski's seventh inning robbery marked her third run scored in the game, with Sophie Durbin (So./Mansfield, Ohio/Mount Vernon Nazarene), Sammi Zabak (So./Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Alex Greenauer (Fr./North Canton, Ohio) also scoring multiple runs. Everyone stepped up offensively, with Durbin reaching base five times with four walks and a triple, along with three RBIs and three stolen bases. Christina Carroll (Fr./Spring, Texas) made the most of her start as well with three hits, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One

  • The Triceratops struck early with four runs in the top of the first. Josi Miliken (Fr./Beloit, Ohio) kicked things off with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Durbin. Back-to-back singles by Adriana Guarnieri (Fr./Chillicothe, Ohio) and Jayliana Wilt (Fr./Youngstown, Ohio) put one and two runs on the board, respectively.
  • An RBI double by Adkins and a two-RBI single by Kepple extended the Triceratops' lead to 7-0 in the second.
  • Phillips really started racking up the strikeouts in the third, punching out the Hawks in order.
  • Hagerstown kept the Tri-C offense quiet for most of the way after the hot start, but Zabak knocked in Aaliyah Thammachak (Fr./Stow, Ohio) to get the Triceratops back on the  board in the top of the sixth. At the end of the outburst, the score was 13-0, Triceratops with RBIs from Guarnieri, Adkins, Gray, and Kepple.
  • A Phillips strikeout – her 13th of the game – put an exclamation point on game one, giving the Triceratops a 13-0 six-inning run-rule victory.

Game Two

  • Tri-C started game two hot as well, with a Miliken single following a Carroll stolen base putting the Triceratops on top, 2-0, in the top of the first.
  • Durbin struck in the top of the second with a bases-clearing triple and was knocked in by Adkins, giving Tri-C a 6-0 lead.
  • Hagerstown got on the board for the first time in the series with a two-run single in the bottom of the third.
  • The Hawks stormed back in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 7-6 lead by taking advantage of a Triceratops error, an RBI walk, a single and a double.
  • A sacrifice fly by Greenauer scored Zabak and tied the game, 7-7 in the top of the fifth. After a pitching change, Adkins doubled, knocking in Durbin and Boguski, putting Tri-C up, 9-7.
  • The Hawks struck back with a game-tying two-run double to left, bringing the game to a 9-9 draw through six.
  • Tri-C wouldn't go quietly. Boguski kicked off a huge seventh inning with a walk and later a steal of home to put the Triceratops on top. An Adkins single, Gray ground out, Carroll single and Guarnieri grounder into an error made up a five-run inning that put Tri-C up 14-9 heading into the game's final at bats.
  • Hagerstown attempted a rally in the home half of the seventh, scoring one with a ground out to Boguski. But Wilt, who re-entered on the mound for the last half inning, struck out the final Hawk to seal the 14-10 victory.
