Triceratops stay perfect on the road with two 8-0 wins over Frederick Community College

FREDERICK, Md. (athletics.tri-c.edu) – Two 8-0 wins April 26 keep the Cuyahoga Community College (26-5, 15-1 OCCAC) perfect away from Parma as the Triceratops put away the home Frederick Community College Cougars (17-16, 11-7 MD JUCO) with ease.

In both games of the doubleheader, outstanding pitching and defense from the Triceratops kept the Cougars from scoring a run. Game one was another work of art by Julee Phillips (So./Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio), who authored a complete game shutout with 12 strikeouts compared to only two hits allowed. In game two, Brooke Brubaker (Fr./Columbiana, Ohio) turned in a gem of her own with six strikeouts and two hits allowed over five innings in the run-rule victory.

Tri-C's offense had no issues traveling, with the Triceratops bats starting hot and staying hot throughout the Sunday slate. In game one, Sophie Durbin launched her first home run since March 22 at Edison State as she, Reese Adkins (So./Glen Oak, Ohio), Lexi Gray (So./Tallmadge, Ohio/Baldwin-Wallace), and Adriana Guarnieri (Fr./Chillicothe, Ohio) each totaled two hits on the day. Game two had a similar story, with Adkins and Josi Miliken (Fr./Beloit, Ohio) each knocking two doubles. Isabelle Kepple (So./Miamisburg, Ohio and Sammi Zabak (So./Broadview Heights, Ohio) joined Miliken and Adkins in the multi-hit club.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One

  • The visiting Triceratops came off the buses ready to go, with Kepple scoring Adkins on a ground out to first base to kick off the series and road trip.
  • The Triceratops wouldn't put a run up until the top of the third, when Durbin launched her solo home run. Later in the inning, Gray would score on an RBI single by Miliken.
  • In the fifth, Kepple knocked in her second RBI, scoring Gray on a sacrifice fly to the second baseman, Daysha Cook.
  • The Triceratops' lead grew to 5-0 in the top of the sixth when Zabak laced a double, bringing Jayliana Wilt (Fr./Youngstown, Ohio) in to score.
  • Tri-C wasn't finished, as a double by Guarnieri that scored Gray and a sacrifice fly by Wilt put the Triceratops on top, 8-0.

Game Two

  • Just like with game one, the Triceratops started the game aggressively, with groundouts by Gray and Kepple each scoring a run to give Tri-C a 2-0 in the first.
  • Both teams were quiet until the top of the third, when Tri-C exploded for five runs. The inning started with a Durbin walk and stolen base, all leading up to her scoring on a double by Miliken. Guarnieri flied out the next at bat, but it was deep enough to bring Kepple home and extend the Triceratops' lead to 4-0. The onslaught continued with a Sammi Zabak single, and she later scored on a wild pitch to push Tri-C to a 7-0 lead.
  • The Triceratops would get the final run needed to end the game on a Kepple single in the top of the fourth, forcing the 8-0 run-rule victory.
