Triceratops take one from #13 Baldwin-Wallace

PARMA, Ohio (athletics.tri-c.edu) – It was Freaky Friday at Ron Mottl Field as the Cuyahoga Community College Triceratops (18-13, 5-1 OCCAC) and the NCAA Division III #13 ranked Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets (23-9, 9-3 OAC) traded blowouts in a tense doubleheader, April 17.

Game one came up all Yellow Jackets, with BW scoring four in the top of the first and never looking back. All told, Baldwin-Wallace took the first contest 11-4 on the back of 11 base hits.

But Tri-C had their time in the sun in game two, exceeding the lofty marks Baldwin-Wallace put up in the first game, winning 17-4 on 15 base hits. Right hander Ryan Torok (So./Canton, Mich./Toledo) came out of the gate fast, striking out two Yellow Jackets in the first frame. Then the offense went to work, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. From that point, the Triceratops never looked back and never relinquished their lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Baldwin-Wallace jumped on starting pitcher Travis Dean (Fr./Medina, Ohio) early, putting up four runs in the first inning.
  • Tri-C answered the bell with one run in the bottom of the first.
  • The Yellow Jackets kept their feet on the gas, adding two runs in the second inning and three in the third.
  • The Triceratops would keep battling throughout the game, plating a run in the fourth and sixth inning.
  • Baldwin-Wallace took full control in the seventh, scoring two runs and pushing their lead to 11-3.
  • Tri-C would add one last run in the final frame.

Game 2

  • Torok got the nod for game two and the Triceratops immediately gave him run support with an RBI single by Vinny Gallaher (So./Toledo, Ohio) and an RBI walk by Brock Miller (So./Lagrange, Ohio).
  • Tri-C didn't stay ahead for long, as the Yellow Jackets scored two of their own runs in the top of the second.
  • The Triceratops kept up the attack with Gallaher lacing a double to kick off the bottom of the third. He was knocked in by Miller with a two-RBI single.
  • The bottom of the fourth had more of the same, with Jamir Ross (Fr./Dayton, Ohio) crushing a triple that plated two runs and a sacrifice fly by Gallaher pushing the Tri-C lead to 7-2.
  • BW attempted to start a rally, scoring one run in the top of the fifth. But 15 took matters into his own hands and kept the Yellow Jackets off the board the rest of the frame.
  • Tri-C answered the call, with 17 smacking an RBI double as the second batter of the inning. They kept pouring it on, with six more runs scoring across the inning punctuated by a two-RBI double by Miller.
  • Ross and the Triceratops kept attacking the Yellow Jacket pitching, with Ross kicking off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double down the left field line. Nathan Hill (So./Medina, Ohio/Toledo) kept the extra base hit parade going with a double off the wall that scored the Triceratops' 17th run of the game.
  • The Jackets wouldn't go quietly, adding two to their total in the final frame.
