Weekly Wrap Up: Tops go 2-2 in OCCAC Play
The Tri-C Softball team had a busy week of OCCAC games as they hosted Hocking College on Tuesday and traveled to Lakeland on Saturday for conference doubleheaders.
Game 1 vs. Hocking, L 12-11
In a wild game, things looked bleak for the Tops as they trailed the Hawks, 12-3 heading into the bottom of the 6th but an offensive explosion by the Tops for eight runs made the score 12-11 headed to the 7th. After shutting down Hocking in the Top of the 7th, the Tops were able to put runners in scoring position but could not get the tying run across and lost a heartbreaker 12-11. Cecilia Stephens led the Tops with 3 hits and 3 RBI's including 2 triples and a double. Also collecting multiple hits for Tri-C were Kelsey Murphy and Mikayla Rash. Abby Gaynor had two RBI's on the day and Stephens and Reiss Johnson each had 3.
Game 2 vs. Hocking, L 12-11
Tri-C came out and took a 2-1 lead which held up until the 5th inning when the Hawks exploded for 5 runs to take a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the 5th the Tops inched closer with two of their own to make it 6-4. The Hawks answered back with 4 runs in the top of the 6th, but the Tops would not go away and scored 5 of their own to make the score 10-9 Hocking. Hocking looked like they would put the game away as they scored twice in the Top of the 7th but the Tops cut the lead to 12-11 and had runners on in an eerily similar situation to the first game but once again could not get the tying or winning runs across. Cecilia Stephens led the Tops at the plate, going 3 for 5, scoring 3 runs and adding 3 RBIs just missing out on hitting for the cycle as she tallied a double, a triple and a homerun. Reis Johnson was the only other Tops with multiple hits with 2. Mckenna Miller and Nicole Goode each had 2 RBI's.
Game 1 vs. Lakeland, W 13-5
After two heartbreaking losses earlier in the week, the Tops were determined to come out on fire on Saturday vs. rival Lakeland. After a scoreless first, the Tops scored 3 in the 2nd, 1 in the third and 4 in the 4th to take control of the game. They pounded out 16 hits on the day with Cecilia Stephens continuing her hot streak with three more hits including a homerun. Also collecting multiple hits in the game were: Reis Johnson, Mckenna Miller with two and Abby Gaynor with three. Haylie Mullett picked up the victory going all 6 innings, striking out 8.
Game 2 vs. Lakeland, W 10-0
The Tops took care of business in five innings in Game 2 of the doubleheader with a 10-0 shutout Lyndsey Baglia was masterful on the mound allowing only 5 hits, striking out 4 and not walking a batter. Cecilia Stephens hit two more homeruns and had 5 RBI's for the Tops! Maddie Brockman had the other multi-hit game for the Tops.
The Tops move to 8-9 overall and 4-2 in the OCCAC. This will be a big week for the Tops as they will play eight OCCAC games (weather dependent), starting with a doubleheader on Wednesday at home hosting Lakeland.
